Numerical Modeling of Intraventricular Flow during Diastole after Implantation of BMHV

چکیده
This work presents a numerical simulation of intraventricular flow after the implantation of a bileaflet mechanical heart valve at the mitral position. The left ventricle was simplified conceptually as a truncated prolate spheroid and its motion was prescribed based on that of a healthy subject. The rigid leaflet rotation was driven by the transmitral flow and hence the leaflet dynamics were solved using fluid-structure interaction approach. The simulation results showed that the bileaflet mechanical heart valve at the mitral position behaved similarly to that at the aortic position. Sudden area expansion near the aortic root initiated a clockwise anterior vortex, and the continuous injection of flow through the orifice resulted in further growth of the anterior vortex during diastole, which dominated the intraventricular flow. This flow feature is beneficial to preserving the flow momentum and redirecting the blood flow towards the aortic valve. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first attempt to numerically model intraventricular flow with the mechanical heart valve incorporated at the mitral position using a fluid-structure interaction approach. This study facilitates future patient-specific studies.

The interaction between left ventricular wall motion and intraventricular flow propagation in acute and chronic ischemia
Myocardial ischemia has been associated with left ventricular (LV) post-systolic shortening. The combination of Tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) and high frame rate acquisition of 2-D color flow makes it possible to study the interaction between LV wall motion and intraventricular flow propagation. The aim of this study was in a clinical model to study the impact of acute myocardial ischemia and pr...

متن کاملStent-based approach for ventricle-to-coronary artery bypass.
BACKGROUND Ventricle-to-coronary artery bypass (VCAB) is an experimental revascularization procedure that provides predominantly systolic instead of diastolic blood flow to a coronary artery. METHODS AND RESULTS In a pig model, a stent-based procedure (VSTENT) was developed to create a VCAB. After thoracotomy, a covered VSTENT was implanted between the left ventricle and the left anterior des...
متن کاملAtrial systole enhances intraventricular filling flow propagation during increasing heart rate.
Diastolic fluid dynamics in the left ventricle (LV) has been examined in multiple clinical studies for understanding cardiac function in healthy humans and developing diagnostic measures in disease conditions. The question of how intraventricular filling vortex flow pattern is affected by increasing heart rate (HR) is still unanswered. Previous studies on healthy subjects have shown a correlati...
متن کاملNumerical Modeling of Mold Filling and Curing in Non-Isothermal RTM Process (RESEARCH NOTE)
Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) is a composite manufacturing process. A preformed fiber is placed in a closed mold and a viscous resin is injected into the mold. In this paper, a model is developed to predict the flow pattern, extent of reaction and temperature change during filling and curing in a thin rectangular mold. A numerical simulation is presented to predict the free surface and its inter...
